What is a PAP smear?

The annual PAP test, starting at age 20, is a standard preventive measure for early detection of cervical cancer. Its purpose is to identify precancerous changes early, preventing the development of cancer. The name "PAP" derives from the Greek pathologist George Nicolas Papanicolaou and is unrelated to the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). However, HPV is the primary cause of cervical cancer.

What is HPV (Human Papillomavirus)?

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection, affecting over 80% of sexually active individuals at some point in their lives. HPV is usually harmless, but some types can lead to genital warts or even cancers in the genital area (cervix, anus) and the throat. Supplementary HPV diagnostics enhance risk assessment and allow for more effective treatment decisions.

FAQ

It is recommended to have a gynecological check-up once a year to detect and treat any changes at an early stage.

The check-up includes an examination of the cervix, uterus, and ovaries, as well as a Pap smear for early detection of cervical cancer.

Regular examinations can help detect diseases such as cervical cancer early, significantly improving the chances of a full recovery.

It is recommended to schedule the check-up outside of menstruation, as it may affect test results, especially the Pap smear. However, in case of urgent complaints, an examination can be done at any time.
